Reyna Brown: Returning to the Womb

November 22 – December 6, 2025 –> EXTENDED through December 19
Opening Reception Saturday, Nov 22, 2–5pm
Closing Ritual Friday, Dec 19, 6–8pm

Black & White Projects is pleased to present Returning to the Womb, a solo graduate exhibition by Bay Area artist Reyna Brown. Returning to the Womb is an immersive project that examines perceptions of femininity, womanhood, and asé through the lens of traditional African spirituality. Translated from Yoruba, “Ìyámi” means “my mothers” or “super powerful ones” and describes the power of the divine feminine. “Aje” refers to a spiritual power resident in menstrual blood that can create lives, import sacred genetic coding, and devolve destinies. The “Ìyámi Aje” are women born with the ability to access asé: the divine life force in all things, personal spiritual authority and power, and a concept for spiritual growth. This collection of work honors the divine feminine through installation of clay, glass and textile sculpture, altars, sound, and paintings.
