Black & White Projects is please to present Klub Rupturre, an interdisciplinary installation by Jenifer K Wofford, a San Francisco-based artist and educator whose work plays with notions of hybridity, authenticity and global culture, often with a humorous bent. She is also 1/3 of the Filipina-American artist trio M.O.B.
Klub Rupturre is an multimedia installation that incorporates drawing, painting, print, video, installation, a 1989 palette, and a late 80s mixtape soundtrack. The exhibition is the artist’s latest in a series of works about earthquakes and takes inspiration from this October’s 30th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that profoundly reshaped much of the culture of the Bay Area.
“I am interested in the idea of seismic shifts, both literally and metaphorically. Tectonic instability is a planetary constant, but there are particular moments where tremors reveal themselves to be larger-scale events of rupture and change … 1989 was significant globally (Tiananmen Square, the fall of the Iron Curtain and apartheid, the stock market crash), but also locally, as evidenced by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake … The ‘89 quake had clear global repercussions, in retrospect: the upheavals that occurred in its aftermath can be seen clearly from Santa Cruz through Silicon Valley to San Francisco, and beyond.” —Jenifer Wofford
Klub Rupturre opens Friday, September 20, 2019, with an opening reception from 7 to 10PM, and continues through October 26. Klub Rupturre!!
